The Hollywood Hills home, listed for $2,495,000, is the only unaltered steel-frame house in Los Angeles from architect Raphael S. Soriano. The 3-bedroom, 3-bath house was declared City Historic-Cultural Landmark Number 325 in August 1987. Although Soriano typically did not include screens for the large glass windows that are a staple in mid-century modern architecture, thinking ideally the homeowner would simply leave the windows open to let fresh air in, Shulman insisted screens be included. The result is a stunning home that in some sections is like a glass box perched on the hillside, surrounded by trees, koi ponds, gardens the photographer referred to as his jungle, and animals, like the birds that would join Shulman and his wife during outdoor breakfasts. Shulman died this summer at the age of 98; he'd lived in this home for almost 60 years.
Chances are this is as close as any of us are likely to get to this beautiful landmark home, so enjoy the virtual tour.

Two Mid Century Modern Sales, One Neighborhood
Mid century modern fans, these are for you. Two estate sales within a mile of each other beginning at 9 am on Friday. Worth coming in late for....or starting the weekend early?
Both sales are in the Skokie-Evanston area just off Golf Road. Each runs on Friday and Saturday.
Sale A: 9511 Drake, Evanston. The cat who ate Danish Modern, with lots of lamps and housewares and teak style thrown in. This one goes from 9 am to 3 pm on Friday and Saturday, 10/9 and 10/10.
Sale B: 9700 Kedvale in Skokie. To control traffic at the opening of the sale at 9 am on Friday, there's a sign-up sheet posted on the front door of this location. No worries, this just means that if you want to be one of the first one in, you should put your name on the list ahead of time. I called the sale conductor, who said by 10:30, everyone should be able to go in without waiting.
In addition to the mid century styles at this sale, there are some first edition books signed by the author and for mad scientists, lots of old chemistry and text books. The estate sale at 9700 Kedvale runs Friday from 9 to 2 and Saturday from 9 to 3.

Rent the whole Mid Century Modern Hotel for New Years Eve
Making big plans for New Year's Eve? If you (and your 600 closest friends) are willing to go to Denver, you can take over an entire hotel for the evening. And pay for it on eBay.
The Curtis Hotel, a boutique with a mid-century modern theme and 330 rooms, has started an auction to sell its services for the night of Dec. 31. The winning bidder gets use of all the rooms, as well as the hotel's grand ballroom, live music, champagne, caviar, dinner, breakfast (and, of course, all the staff) to pull off a once-in-a-lifetime party.
It's not unprecedented for a hotelier to rent out an entire property to a single client, but it's a sales tactic more common with smaller hotels. With such a large number of rooms – on a busy night for hotels – the price is likely to be steep; by the beginning of this week, there was already a bid for $50,000 (U.S.), which didn't hit the hotel's minimum price for the auction. But that means the door is still open, and the auction doesn't end until Sunday.
For details, see www.wonnightonly.com.

Alan Hess, the pre-eminent architectural historian is lecturing on the Mid Century Modern legacy of Paul Willams , and the fascinating topic of “Googie”. This event is at 7 pm, is free to the public, and will be held at the Historic Fifth Street School.
Paul Williams designed the conch shell lobby of the La Concha hotel here in Las Vegas. It was saved from the wrecking ball, and will be the new visitors center at the Neon Museum. It’s as good of an example of Goggie as there is.

Eames Giant House Of Cards
The Eameses designed the House of Cards as a construction toy comprised of 20 large interlocking slotted cards. The images and patterns printed on them are of what Eameses called “good stuff “, chosen to celebrate “familiar and nostalgic objects from the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms.”
The card sets come in 3 sizes, small, medium and large (giant), and at one time came in a number of alternate designs: Computer House of Cards (1970) and Newton House of Cards for the 1974 Nobel Laureates.

Forever Fullerton exhibit featuring the photography of Julius Shulman
My husband and I attended the opening night reception of Fullerton Museum’s new Forever Fullerton exhibit featuring the classic photography of world-renowned mid-century architectural photographer Julius Shulman. This was an especially exciting treat since I've admired his iconic images for years. But what made it even more special was the exhibit was comprised entirely of photos he took here in Fullerton during the 50s and 60s. More specifically of the Forever House tract of mid-century modern homes designed by Eichler design team Jones and Emmons.
There were also images of Nicolas Junior High, Golden Hills Elementary and Fern Drive Elementary, which was cool for us since two of our children currently attend this school. The exhibit also featured authentic retro furniture staged in a living room setting. The equally fitting exhibit structure itself was designed by Fullerton’s own Silber Architects, whom were also instrumental in getting the show off the ground. The following reception included a nice buffet dinner and live jazz entertainment. Kudos to Fullerton Museum curator Richard Smith, and everyone else who made the exhibit possible. Whether a fan of mid-century architectural photography or just interested in seeing what homes looked like during the atomic age, do yourself a favor and visit before it closes July 19. You won’t be disappointed.
